Pygeum for Prostate Health: Evidence & Caveats

What research suggests about pygeum and BPH symptoms, including important limitations.

Reviewed for factual consistency with authoritative health sources. Updated September 2026.

Medical note: This site provides general educational information, not diagnosis or treatment. New, persistent, severe, or worrying urinary symptoms should be discussed with a qualified health professional.

What the evidence suggests

NCCIH describes some limited evidence that Pygeum africanum may improve some BPH symptoms over the short term. It also notes important limitations in the underlying research, including small studies, short duration and varied preparations.

What that does not prove

Limited evidence for a specific preparation does not establish that every prostate supplement containing pygeum will work, nor does it replace evaluation of urinary symptoms.
